QUESTION FROM @indie_dev_dan
2026-04-10
"I'm building an AI app and want to target Chinese users. Can I just use Stripe and expect them to figure it out, or do I have to integrate WeChat Pay? And if so, how?"
PABLO'S ANSWER
You absolutely cannot expect them to 'figure out' Stripe. Chinese consumers do not use credit cards online. It's WeChat Pay or Alipay, or zero revenue.
The catch: as a foreign entity, integrating directly with WeChat/Alipay is a nightmare of paperwork. Your best path is using an aggregator like PingPong or a merchant of record like Paddle that supports Alipay/WeChat natively. Yes, they take a larger cut, but they abstract away the compliance.QUESTION FROM @design_thoughts

"Why do Chinese apps feel so cluttered compared to Western design standards? Everything is a super-app."
PABLO'S ANSWER
It's not 'cluttered', it's high-density. Western design (Apple/Google) prioritizes negative space and single-purpose flows. Chinese design prioritizes discoverability and zero-click access.
Also, remember the context: the mobile internet boom in China skipped the desktop era for hundreds of millions of users. They didn't start with Google Search; they started with app portals. A 'super app' is essentially a mobile OS. If you build a single-purpose app in China, users get annoyed they have to leave WeChat to use it.
